At Trilogy Active, we believe employment is about more than having a job. It is about creating opportunity, building confidence, improving wellbeing, and helping people realise their potential.
As a charitable social enterprise, we recognise that meaningful employment is one of the strongest contributors to individual wellbeing, social mobility, and thriving communities. We created our Career Pathways & Future Leaders Programme to do more than fill vacancies. We wanted to create genuine pathways into employment, remove barriers to opportunity, develop local talent, and support people to build sustainable careers regardless of their background, experience, or starting point.
Over the past 12 months, more than 250 colleagues have participated in employment and skills development opportunities through apprenticeships, workplace placements, professional qualifications, mentoring, leadership development, and career progression initiatives. The programme operates year-round and is embedded within our long-term People Strategy, ensuring sustainable delivery and ongoing investment in our workforce.

What makes our approach innovative is the way we connect recruitment, apprenticeships, workplace placements, qualifications, mentoring, and leadership development into one continuous pathway. Rather than viewing employment as simply filling vacancies, Trilogy Active views employment as a social intervention that creates opportunity, develops skills, removes barriers, and supports progression from a first opportunity through to future leadership roles.
This approach has helped colleagues achieve exceptional outcomes, including Gemma Halifax progressing from Community Sport and Health Apprentice to Northamptonshire Chamber Apprentice of the Year, and Kayden progressing from a supported Mencap placement into paid employment.
By investing in people, not just positions, we create opportunities that change lives, strengthen communities, and deliver lasting social value.
Employment, skills development, and social mobility are recognised nationally as key contributors to health, wellbeing, economic resilience, and community prosperity. Across the UK, organisations are being encouraged to tackle skills shortages, support workforce development, improve employability, and create inclusive pathways into work.
As a charitable social enterprise, Trilogy Active believes employers have an important role to play in achieving these objectives. Meaningful employment provides far more than financial security. It builds confidence, develops transferable skills, creates purpose, improves wellbeing, and strengthens connections within communities.
Our Career Pathways & Future Leaders Programme directly supports these priorities by creating routes into employment, investing in workforce development, supporting apprenticeships, promoting inclusive recruitment, and providing clear opportunities for career progression. By developing local talent and investing in people at every stage of their career journey, we are helping to build a skilled workforce while contributing to stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities.
Trilogy Active is deeply embedded within the communities we serve. Through our facilities, programmes, and partnerships, we engage with thousands of local residents every year and actively promote opportunities to access employment, training, and career development.
Our Career Pathways & Future Leaders Programme works closely with local schools, Northampton College, Moulton College, Jobcentre Plus, Northamptonshire Chamber, apprenticeship providers, Mencap, MIND, Prospect, NEAT and other community organisations to raise awareness of the wide range of careers available within leisure, sport, health, and wellbeing. Through careers events, workplace experiences, placements, apprenticeships, recruitment initiatives, and employability activities, we help individuals understand the opportunities available and the routes they can take to build rewarding careers.
We recognise that access to employment opportunities is not equal for everyone. By working alongside community and employment partners, we actively seek to reduce barriers and create more inclusive pathways into work. These partnerships enable us to support young people entering the workplace, individuals returning to employment, people seeking career changes, and those who may require additional support to access meaningful work opportunities.
One example is our partnership with Mencap, which provided a supported workplace placement for Kayden. Through tailored support and practical workplace experience, Kayden developed confidence, independence, and employability skills before progressing into paid employment with Trilogy Active.
Our partnership approach ensures we are not only developing our own workforce but also contributing to wider community objectives around social mobility, inclusion, employability, and skills development. By creating meaningful connections between local people and employment opportunities, we are helping to strengthen the local workforce, improve life chances, and ensure our teams reflect the diverse communities we proudly serve.
Over the past 12 months, more than 250 colleagues have participated in employment and skills development opportunities across Trilogy Active. Through our commitment to developing talent and creating clear pathways for progression, we have supported 10 apprentices, enabled the completion of 50 professional qualifications, and helped 25 colleagues progress into new roles or take on increased responsibilities. A further 25 colleagues have participated in leadership development activities designed to build confidence, capability, and future leadership potential.
Our commitment to creating opportunities extends beyond our existing workforce. During the same period, we delivered 10 workplace placements, engaged with 20 schools, colleges, and community partners, and attended 8 employment and community engagement events to promote careers, skills development, and employability opportunities across the communities we serve.
The quality and impact of our approach have also been recognised externally. Gemma Halifax achieved a Distinction in her Level 3 Community Sport and Health Apprenticeship and was subsequently named Northamptonshire Chamber Apprentice of the Year, demonstrating the transformational impact of investing in people and supporting individual potential. Trilogy Active has also received national recognition through the Activfirst Best Workplace Award, reflecting our commitment to creating a positive, supportive, and developmental working environment.
Together, these outcomes demonstrate our commitment to creating opportunity, developing skills, supporting progression, and delivering measurable social value through employment, workforce development, and community engagement.
The impact of our programme extends far beyond qualifications and job titles.
For participants, it creates confidence, independence, employability, financial stability, career progression, and a stronger sense of belonging. For communities, it develops local talent, strengthens the workforce, improves social mobility, and creates opportunities that might not otherwise exist.
Gemma Halifax’s (pictured) journey demonstrates the transformational impact of investing in people. When she joined Trilogy Active as an apprentice, she was passionate and hardworking but lacked confidence in her own abilities. Through mentoring, support, and development opportunities, she achieved a Distinction, became Northamptonshire Chamber Apprentice of the Year, and gained the confidence to pursue opportunities she previously would not have considered possible, including coaching young people at a basketball camp in America.
Kayden’s journey demonstrates the value of inclusive employment opportunities. Through a supported placement with Trilogy Active, he developed confidence, independence, workplace skills, and progressed into paid employment. The impact was not simply gaining a job, but gaining purpose, belonging, confidence, and future opportunity.
These stories demonstrate how meaningful employment can positively change lives, strengthen communities, and create lasting social value.
The Career Pathways & Future Leaders Programme is fully embedded within Trilogy Active’s long-term People Strategy and workforce planning processes, ensuring sustainability beyond individual projects or funding cycles.
Unlike short-term initiatives, this programme forms part of how we operate. We view investment in people as an investment in our communities and future workforce. As a charitable social enterprise, every pound we generate is reinvested into our facilities, programmes, communities, and people, allowing us to continue creating opportunities and delivering social value.
Our long-term ambition is to create a clear and accessible employment pathway:
Entry Level → Apprentice → Skilled Colleague → Team Leader → Manager → Senior Leader
We believe talent exists at every level of our organisation. By identifying potential early and supporting development throughout a colleague’s career journey, we create sustainable careers while strengthening our organisation and communities.
The programme is highly scalable and can be replicated across all Trilogy Active facilities and service areas. Through continued investment in apprenticeships, qualifications, mentoring, leadership development, and community partnerships, we will continue to broaden access to opportunities and maximise social impact.
Trilogy Active’s ambition is to continue using employment and skills development as a vehicle for creating long-term social value across Northamptonshire and the Midlands and the communities we serve.
Over the coming years, we will expand our partnerships with schools, colleges, employment providers, apprenticeship providers, Jobcentre Plus, Northampton College, Moulton College, Northamptonshire Chamber, MIND, Prospect, NEAT and other community organisations to strengthen links between education, employability, and the workplace. This will include career insight opportunities, mentoring, workplace experiences, sector awareness sessions, and pathways that help people understand and access careers within leisure, sport, health, and wellbeing.
We also aim to extend the reach of our Future Leaders Programme, creating additional development opportunities for colleagues with leadership potential and supporting succession planning across the organisation.
Alongside this, we will explore greater collaboration with local employers and partners to share best practice around inclusive recruitment, workforce wellbeing, skills development, and career progression. By working collectively, we can help remove barriers, improve access to opportunities, and contribute to a stronger and more resilient local workforce.
Our ambition is not simply to develop our own workforce, but to inspire future generations, improve social mobility, and demonstrate how a values-led organisation can create meaningful and lasting change through employment.
