120 Years and Counting for Bramley Baths

Published on: November 25th 2024

Last month the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung and Bramley Baths celebrated 120 years of serving local people with a photo call and reception for special guests.

The event was exactly 120 years to the day that the then Lord Mayor of Leeds Mr A. Currer Briggs open the baths in 1904. Guests from the Arts Council, Leeds Civic Trust, Sporting Heritage, Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, plus many others, celebrated 120 years of almost continuous operations serving the community and people of Leeds.

And on Saturday 19 October an Edwardian circus themed birthday party celebrated with the community, complete with fun swims, fire eaters, suffragettes, a strong man, arts, crafts, cake and goody bags.

The events attracted extensive media coverage from BBC Look North, the West Leeds Dispatch, BBC News, and BBC Radio Leeds broadcasted their evening drive time programme live from the Baths’ balcony.

Bramley also chose the day as an opportunity to launch their Community Share Offer.

The baths need to raise £350,000 to repair and restore the roof and decrease environmental impact. They have chosen to fundraise through their first ever Community Share Offer; Ethical finance, which allows them to go beyond not only being community led, but part community owned.

David Wilford, Chief Executive Officer at Bramley Baths said: “We are delighted to have celebrated this special anniversary with our local community and the people of Leeds. We are very proud of everything the Baths have achieved in its 120-year history and I’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers for their hard work, the board of trustees, and the press for supporting this significant milestone.

“It is a fitting platform from which to launch our exciting community share offer, to make the Baths not only community led but part community owned, as we head into the next chapter in the Baths’ story.”
