Community Leisure UK Members Commit to Carbon Literacy

Published on: October 16th 2024

We were over the moon when we found out we’d been shortlisted by the Social Value Portal for the Social Value Awards 2024 for our Carbon Literacy Training for Public Leisure and Culture.  We find out on Thursday (17 October) if we’ve been successful in the Creating Capability Award category – fingers crossed.

But we’re equally proud of the achievements created in such a short space of time that has supported our members and other organisations working in public leisure and culture.

Since we began this project in 2023-

  • 44% of all Community Leisure UK members now have at least one member of staff who is certified Carbon Literate
  • 87 participants across 44 organisations have taken part
  • 100% of Community Leisure UK staff are certified Carbon Literate and able to deliver training to members
  • 95% of learners are certified Carbon Literate
  • 84 pledges have been made

And here’s the two big stats!

  • Collectively participants pledged to save 39.36 tonnes of carbon emissions
  • Using the Carbon Literacy Project’s definition of ‘carbon saved’ and applying this to NT31 this would equate to £9,628.64 added social value from this project

Fantastic commitment by the whole team at Community Leisure UK but especially Jenn Huygen for driving this key project and Steph Seaton for her expert training. And Rachel Sim for putting a fantastic bid together. Special thanks to the Carbon Literacy Project for their inspiration and support.

This training is open to anyone working in public leisure and culture and it’s rolling programme. That means we still have a few spots left in November to join, as well as places in the new year.  Cost is just £50pp and the training is delivered virtually over two half days.
