Hyndburn Celebrate £10,000 Funding from Sport England to Provide Free Exercise Classes for Unpaid Carers

Published on: February 4th 2025

Hyndburn Leisure is thrilled to announce a £10,000 grant from Sport England to fund a new project offering free exercise classes for unpaid carers.

Set to launch in Spring 2025, the initiative will provide carers with access to a 12-week series of multi-sport activities, held on the 3G pitch at Hyndburn Leisure Centre.

National figures reveal that 34% of unpaid carers exercise significantly less due to their caregiving responsibilities, and a striking 80% report feeling lonely or socially isolated. The new project aims to support carers, who often face physical and emotional challenges while balancing their responsibilities.

Activities will range from netball, football, tennis, and cricket to gentler options like yoga, catering to a variety of fitness levels. To ease any hesitation, carers are welcome to bring a buddy along for additional support.

Portfolio holder for Leisure, Councillor Noordad Aziz expressed enthusiasm for the project: “This initiative reflects Hyndburn Leisure’s commitment to supporting those who do so much for others, often without recognition or rest. It’s positive to see the Trust partnering with Carers Link Lancashire to bring this much-needed project to life, offering carers a chance to improve their health, connect with others, and enjoy a well-deserved break.”

This innovative project has been thoughtfully designed to engage carers, ensuring it meets their needs. In close collaboration with Carers Link Lancashire, the Trust is committed to shaping a supportive and inclusive experience.

Vision Beyond the Pilot

This pilot is just the beginning. Insights gained from this project will inform future work with carers and other underrepresented groups. Hyndburn Leisure is committed to expanding this initiative to build long-term community partnerships, strengthen ties with local health services, and explore additional funding to sustain support for carers and care leavers.

Rebecca Hodgson, CEO at Carers Link Lancashire commented on the impact of this initiative: “Carers often put their own needs last, but projects like this give them a valuable opportunity to focus on their own health and well-being. We’re thrilled to partner with Hyndburn Leisure to offer this program, which will provide a safe and welcoming space for carers to unwind, build connections, and recharge.”

Carers who are registered with Carers Link Lancashire can take part with no cost.

We look forward to seeing how this project evolves and positively impacts those who participate.”
