Whalley Range/Manchester actress Susanna Amato has amazed herself and others by completing a 30km swim in 30 days – less than a year after learning to swim in Manchester’s Hough End pool, operated by national leisure provider ‘Better‘.
The self-described “shy and self-conscious” Susanna (aged 34), was coached by Better Swim School’s Danielle Knowles, to complete her marathon, raising £3,000 for her theatre project Landfill of Memories – a ‘funny, moving, and deeply human exploration of our relationship to things, hoarding and grief’.
Danielle said: “As a charitable social enterprise, Better champions access, wellbeing and community.
“We have been delighted to support Susanna’s learn-to-swim challenge – and are so proud of her achievement – it’s very much in the spirit of Manchester’s passion for sport.”
“We wish her all the best with her swimming and her art projects.”
Susanna said: “My parents never learned to swim and I was frightened of the water following several water safety accidents”.
“When I went travelling as an adult the limits of not swimming became evident – for my safety, freedom and enjoyment.”
“Learning to swim with Hough End’s lovely swimming community is excellent. And swimming is gentle on the joints while great for mind and body.”
Susanna praises the confidence swimming has brought to all aspects of her life – including her creativity. Her artistic role models include performance artist Marina Abramovich.
