Robert Batey – Vision Redbridge

About Banner

Robert is an exceptional employee whose dedication, professionalism and commitment consistently exceed the expectations of his role.

Since joining Vision in April 2021, he has become a highly respected and valued member of the Parks and Open Spaces team, making a significant contribution to conservation, volunteer development, community engagement and environmental stewardship across the borough.

Renowned for his strong work ethic, humility and positive attitude, Robert approaches every challenge with enthusiasm and professionalism. He is equally effective working independently or as part of a team and is always willing to support colleagues, sharing his knowledge and expertise whenever needed. He routinely goes above and beyond, often working in difficult conditions to ensure projects and services are delivered to the highest standard.

Robert currently helps manage both Claybury Park and Woods and Roding Valley Park, while also taking responsibility for the James Leal Centre at Ray Park. In addition to these demanding responsibilities, he successfully held together the Nature Conservation team during a period of reduced management and staffing capacity, demonstrating outstanding leadership, resilience and commitment to service delivery.

One of Robert’s greatest strengths is his ability to inspire and engage others. He coordinates approximately 60 conservation volunteers, ensuring they are supported, informed and appreciated throughout the year. His dedication to volunteer welfare is remarkable and reflects his genuine passion for people and community involvement. The strong relationships he has built have played a vital role in the success of numerous conservation initiatives, across many of our sites in Redbridge.

Robert’s innovation and creativity have also delivered tangible benefits to Vision and the wider community. A notable example was his idea to utilise apples harvested from the Ancient Orchard at Claybury within the cafĂ© at Hainault Forest.

This initiative successfully linked conservation, sustainability and visitor engagement, becoming one of the highlights of the year.

His expertise and dedication have contributed significantly to the achievement of key environmental standards and accreditations.

Robert plays a leading role in the management of Green Flag and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) applications, including the preparation of management plans and representing Vision during inspections and assessments.

He has also successfully managed projects with external partners, including work with the Environment Agency to create natural flood management features within Claybury Park. This was a large project for the borough and Roberts position, knowledge and help were well valued by all stakeholders.

Beyond his formal responsibilities, Robert has demonstrated exceptional commitment to public safety and environmental protection. He has been instrumental in managing and preventing fire incidents at Claybury, working closely with the London Fire Brigade to address complex underground fires and mitigate risks to visitors and wildlife.

He also works closely with the Metropolitan Police and Parks Police to tackle anti-social behaviour, illegal activity and community safety issues. His vigilance and dedication were recognised by the Metropolitan Police in 2021 following his discovery of a dangerous weapon concealed within the park.

Robert is widely respected by colleagues, volunteers, partner organisations and visitors alike. His professionalism, kindness and unwavering commitment to excellence have earned him the admiration of everyone he works with.

Despite his many achievements, he remains modest and selfless, preferring his work and results to speak for themselves.
