The British Red Cross has teamed up with leisure centre provider GLL to open a new mobility aids service at Kendall Leisure centre.

The service offers a range of wheelchairs and home mobility aids and accessories through both a hire and loan service with referrals typically made by health professionals.

The new service will be running on a trial basis running through September to November. The aim is to offer those living in the local area access to short term mobility aids, in an easy and accessible way.  If successful, the pilot is likely to be rolled out further, in partnership with GLL-operated leisure centres across the UK.

Jolene Swann, GLL’s general manager at Kendal Leisure Centre said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the British Red Cross mobility aids service and helping to improve the local community’s access to this vital equipment.  As a charitable social enterprise, we are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Kendal’s residents, so providing a base for the service made total sense.”

Cat Raynor, Innovation Officer at the British Red Cross Mobility Aids Service, said: “Our partnership with GLL means that people living in Kendall won’t have to travel far to access essential mobility aids.  These short-term aids play a critical role in people’s mental and physical health during times of injury or illness so it is vital that they can be easily accessed.”
