Community Leisure UK’s hugely popular Carbon Literacy Training for Public Leisure & Culture has been commended for leading the environmental charge for the sector.
The bespoke training for those working in public leisure and culture launched in 2023 and has seen 44 companies and 87 learners become Carbon Literate to date.
Led by Jennifer Huygen, Head of Policy and Strategic Partnership at Community Leisure UK – staff at Community Leisure UK took part in the training with the Carbon Literacy Project before tailoring it to be sector specific.
Phil Korbel, Co-founder and Director of Advocacy at The Carbon Literacy Project, said: “I love the fact that Community Leisure UK came to us without ‘climate training’ on the horizon, but quickly understood how it would enable their members to thrive, and now, it leads the field in the sector. Exactly how Carbon Literacy should work with sector membership bodies – whatever the sector.”
Its success is down to using simple explanations of the complex subject matter and sector specific examples of good practice. A new Shareable Course has also been made available – a ready to use training resource to upskill your whole workforce to be Carbon Literate.
Jennifer Huygen, Head of Policy and Strategic Partnership at Community Leisure UK said: “I have to pinch myself sometimes to appreciate how much progress we’ve made in just a year’s time. Carbon Literacy is the first step for many on their decarbonisation journey. Once you’ve completed your training, that’s your first step to become more confident and knowledgeable about how climate change affects all of us and what practical steps we can take; even small changes can be effective. The course allows you to identify quick wins in your organisation, and feel confident in building a case for further change.
The new Shareable Course will be available to all those completing the initial Carbon Literacy for Public Leisure and Culture course, allowing them to go on and deliver Carbon Literacy Training for people within their own company. If you are already certified Carbon Literate and working in Public Leisure and Culture, you may also be eligible to access this course to deliver training within your organisation.
All Community Leisure UK staff are now certified to deliver the training with main member training being delivered by Network Support Officer, Stephanie Seaton.
Phil Rumbelow, Chair of Community Leisure UK, said: “I’m immensely proud of the commitment and effort the CLUK team has put in place to ensure this project’s success.
“As a members’ organisation, we are committed to finding ways to support our members to enhance their business model by supporting the development of practical solutions to ongoing challenges. With an ageing and costly leisure stock, focusing on ways to save energy and money – as well as caring for the environment – is of paramount importance for many of our members.”
