Olympian Sally Gunnell set to host first ever Seriously Social Awards

Published on: September 26th 2024

Olympic champion and wellbeing advocate, Sally Gunnell OBE, is set to host the first ever Seriously Social Awards this November.

Organised by Community Leisure UK, the awards will celebrate the difference their members make doing social good and putting people above profit through their work as charities and social enterprises delivering public leisure and culture. Ultimately, helping individuals and communities live healthier, happier and more creative lives. Book your place today.

Sally Gunnell OBE remains the only woman ever to hold four major track titles concurrently – Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth. But it was back in 1992 with her 400m Olympic hurdle success that she became a household name. Since retiring from international athletics, Sally developed a new career path as a keynote speaker and wellbeing advocate.

Phil Rumbelow, Chair of Community Leisure UK, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Sally is hosting our first ever Seriously Social Awards. Her career and success, by her own admission, was a mixture of determination and hard graft in the pursuit of excellence. And that’s something that will really resonate with our members. They work incredibly hard – not because it is profitable but because it’s the right thing to do.

“They are a key part of the social economy, supporting people above profit for social good and connecting communities – helping people to become healthier, happier and more creative, regardless of age or ability.”

CLUK’s Seriously Social Awards are being held at the Lowry, Manchester on Wednesday 13 November. There are eight categories to be won representing the different ways Charitable Trusts and Social Enterprises create social impact and positive social change through their work.

Kirsty Cumming, CEO of Community Leisure UK, said: “Our members make a huge difference to hundreds of thousands of people’s lives each year, serving and supporting everybody who lives in the communities where they work. They are driven by social justice to do right by everyone and their contribution to the state is significant with more than £893M worth of Social Value generated by their work each year.

“These awards are a chance to say thank you and celebrate their fantastic achievements.”
